Documents

Material the school has kept: charts, terminology, and the work of the teachers who came before us. Some of it is nearly seventy years old.

Yama Arashi Ryu · Nagai Ryu Jujitsu

Terminology

The dojo's own glossary — the words used on the mat, the kata by name, and the counting you will hear from the first class onward.

Japanese characters are shown where the reading is certain. A handful of romanisations have been regularised against standard usage; the dojo's own file records the originals.

Reference Charts

Sheets the dojo has worked from for years. Click any of them to open it full size. One is Shihan Goody's own; of the other five we do not know who drew them — if you do, tell us and we will credit them properly.

Chart of katame-no-kata: osaekomi-waza holding techniques, shime-waza strangles and kansetsu-waza joint techniques, five of each, drawn as small numbered figures.
Katame-no-kata. The grappling forms — holds, strangles and joint techniques, five of each. Full size →
Chart of karate blocks, each demonstrated by a figure in gi: age uke, gedan barai, uchi uke, soto uke, shuto uke, osae uke, teisho uke, gedan juji uke, jodan juji uke, haishu uke, nagashi uke, sukui uke, morote uke and sokumen.
Uke — the blocks. Fourteen receiving techniques, named. Useful from the first karate class onward. Full size →
Chart of karate striking surfaces, each drawn as a hand or foot with the contact point marked in red: ippon nukite, uraken, empi, seiken, teisho, keito, washide, nihon nukite, haito, shuto, seiryuto, kumade, kakuto, haishu, ippon ken, nakadaka ken, hiraken, yoahon nukite, hiza, haisoku, koshi, kakato, sokuto and teisoku.

A hand-drawn chart of sixty judo throws in four groups: leg throws (ashi-waza), hip throws (koshi-waza), arm throws (te-waza) and sacrifice throws (sutemi-waza), each figure captioned with its Japanese name.
Nage-waza — the sixty throws. Drawn and self-published by Shihan Frank Goody, who was an artist as well as a teacher. Number 44 is yama arashi, the throw this school is named for. Full size →
Chart of the five aikido immobilisations, ikkyo through gokyo, each shown in two stages.
The five immobilisations. Ikkyo through gokyo, two stages each. Captioned in French on the original, which is the only clue to where it came from. Full size →
A chart of the eight energies of Tai Chi. A rectangle with its corners cut off encloses a taijitu. Each of the four sides and four corners is labelled with a name in capitals, a pronunciation in brackets and a short gloss: PENG (pong) inflated; LIC (lick) split; AN (on) push; KAU (cow) shoulder or lean on you; LU / LAY (lou / lay) bullfighter; ZHO (zow) elbow; GHEE (gee) crowd or stick; CHOI (choy) pluck.
The eight forces. Four along the sides, four across the cut corners — peng, lu, ghee, an and choi, lic, zho, kau — each with the dojo's own pronunciation and a one-word handle for what it does. These are the energies the Chen forms are built out of, which is why this hangs where the Tuesday class can see it. Full size →
